Just got done dragging this fella in on public land. No UTV, just pulled a few yards at a time until I got him to my pickup around 700 yards away. Not going to do that again, nearly the death of me at my age. Got him with a Pedersoli Blue Ridge Rifle in .54, using a .530 round ball, .015 linen patch, and 60 grains of 3f Swiss. He walked up from behind my left shoulder as I was sitting on a log up up against a tree. He never saw me, despite wearing orange hat and vest. Fell at the shot, wish he had run towards my truck.
Very well-done!

What a great looking buck!! I have never had to drag one that far but my brother and I did carry one lashed to a pole! It was my nephews first deer. Cabelas hawkins 50 cal. It ran 300 yards around then down a steep KY hillside!! It was brutal…slope was at or over a 50* . My brother bought a game cart after that!!

If I continue hunting deer in future years, I am going to have to acquire some sort of contrivance to get them out. In reality, when I go out, I don't expect to see anything, as I only have access to heavily hunted public land on which to pursue game. However, the last two years I have shot bucks at an almost identical location, and both times it resulted not only in the death of the deer, but nearly of myself. Seriously, both times it took me hours of strenuous effort to get these bucks out of the woods. With over 6 decades of life past, I am not going to continue to be able to do that. Sure miss the days of throwing a deer on my shoulders and walking out!

Congrats! And I am not dragging on public anymore. It really is easy to quarter out or I will go ahead and debone it right there and just pack out. May seem silly, but you’re going to need to do that anyway and it is SO easy to get out that way!

Funny how when you squeeze the trigger or release an arrow, you feel like a kid again, but when it comes time to drag it out, all the sudden you feel 120. I've gotten to be fond of my deer cart on public, and my Yamaha of private. Great shot on a great buck!
