Recently bought a Pedersoli frontier .45cal flintlock new and can't get the breech plug out. Tried clamping the barrel in sheet lead and hardwood blocks used a 15 inch wrench and 3lb. hammer. Couldn't move it. Removed the touch hole liner first. Heard some place that Pedersoli uses some sort of "modified"breech plug.
What is that? The bore of the plug is smaller than the barrel maybe .30-.35 or so. If anyone can send me to some info on this it will be appreciated much.
I'm new to the group, if I posted in the wrong forum please let me know.

thanks

Why are you trying to remove the breechplug. they are not meant to be removed. You do not need to remove them for cleaning. They are not one of those In***es, where the plug comes out for cleaning. there are a lot of threads here about cleaning your gun. Removing the breechplug will more than likely void the warrenty.

Hi Rebel thanks for the reply. Trying to remove it because the manual (very general) that came with it recomends removing it for cleaning and puting a light coat of antisieze on the threads. Also would like to be able to use a brush on it as it's smaller in diamiter than the barrel. I'm new at this, need all the learning I can get.

thanks again

The manual that came with a Frontier rifle said to remove the Breechplug? That's a new one on me. Are you sure they didn't mean the vent liner? I have never heard of any manufacturer of a Traditional style rifle recommending the removal of the breechplug.

Good Afternoon Fizzenface,

If you will read my posting that Davy referenced and scroll farther down on that thread, you find a photo of the rifle in question (Davy's) that he posted.

My post explains my assessment of the problem, and how we decided to correct the problem.

Short of doing what Davy and I did, the next easiest best solution is to afix a centerfire 6mm or 25 caliber bore brush to an all metal range rod and use that to break up the accumulated burnt powder residue in the breech powder chamber.

Some black podwer cleaning solvent be used. The powder chamber must be wiped dry or you will have another problem, wet powder.

The powder chamber diameter is 1/4 inch in diameter and in my opinion will be a constant source of ignition problems after 20-25 rounds.

I am not sure why you are having trouble pulling your breech plug, Davy's was no problem. As Davy suggested, apply Kroil penetrating oil to thr breech threads for at 3-4 days, the try to un-screw the breech plug.

Best regards and good shooting,

John L. Hinnant

If you are not an NRA Member, I am carrying your load.

That breechplug, though it may not look like it, is actually a form of "patten breech". The threaded portion extends well up into the barrel and is bored to form a powder chamber, then the vent liner or percussion nipple drum threads through the barrel and into the breech plug. The vent liner must be remover before the plug. I guess it is a strong arrangement but it's also a major pain. :curse:

Frizzenface......I have a Blue Ridge Flint in .50 that is similar to yours.....I clean the Patent breech by taking out the vent liner and slipping a pipe cleaner into the communication hole.......The hole in the patent breech is small.....I'd say around a 1/4 inch or less.......I use 3fg powder and have no problems........I had problems when I used 2fg........It was bridgeing in the small hole in the breechplug.........Go to the hardware store and get yourself a brass 10-32 thread screw about 3 inches long.......file down the head to make it fit the communication hole so you can scrape it by fitting it in your ramrod...............You can file it down enough to make a jag for the patent breech..............Good luck.....Bob

Davy & John L. Hinnant thanks for the heads up. That is the same model as mine. Your explanation and photo give me a clear picture of what I found. Will try soaking for few days and try again. :thanks:

I have a Pedersoli .45 and I suggest you NEVER remove the breech-plug. Mine has been shot thousands of times - and often 50 shots in a row without cleaning. Just unscrew the breech plug and flush the barrel with warm water. The 'patent' breech section will flush clean - no extra effort needed. Patent breeches will cause a problem if you wipe after every shot and push 'crud' into the chamber.

Leatherbark! I agree with Your system 100%.One of the main problems in removeing the breech plug many times with this system is that eventually the vent will not line up the same after the threads strech and wear and it will not be tight in the threads when the vent liner is screwed into the side of the plug. This is one reason Mfgs. void the warrantys if the plug is removed by other than a gunsmith or their own personel.

Leatherbark, glad you mentioned the 3fg over the 2fg. I keep hearing that in .45cal it's eather or for the 2fg and the 3. You having the same model gat I'll take the 3fg. I will also pick up that 10_32 screw at the old Home Despot this week, great idea. Thanks

Another alternative...I keep a separate rifle cleaning rod rigged up with a slim 25-30cal brush on it...I just wrap a patch around it and slide it down in to clean and lube inside the patent breeches of my TC Hawkens

I thought about pulling the breechplug on my flint
Mortimer 12 ga. in order to expand the size of the powder chamber of the patent breech. Fouling was a problem. Impossible!! So, I gave it to a local guy who is a Pedersoli distributor as well as a gunsmith. He said pulling a Pedersoli plug was a bad idea.Thin wall barrels have been bent doing that.
Instead, using a center bore guide he drilled it out with
a an extended bit. Turns out the hole at the face of the chamber was next to nothing but the chamber itself was ok.
Beats risking a marred finish not to mention a bent barrel

I do not recall pulling the plug in my Pedersoli to be any major problem .. although John pulled it as I watched and with his years of experience and proper tooling (he is a machinist by trade) he also pulled a TC Renegade breechplug at the same time .. now THAT one ... was on there bud!

But he made it look so easy ... I guess skill, experience and technique will out! He has a gargantuan barrel vise and plug wrench from hell! A spray with Kroil, a couple of tap with a non marring hammer to set up a small vibration to help the kroil gop to work .. a little soak time ... viola out came both! :p No bent barrels or crapped out breech plugs here pardners! He then reamed it larger to perfection! Rein-stalled plugs with some anti-seize! ::
