After a very long six months waiting for the licensing paperwork to arrive I finally got my hands on my new (second hand) .50 cal Kentucky flinter. It looks good, feels good and seems to throw a reasonable spark.

I can't believe how light it is and how easily it comes up to the shoulder. I'm not too fussed on the rear sight but that is an easy fix. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but I am thinking it will be a joy to carry and hunt with.

For $400 I reckon I did okay. Let the good times roll...

Looks great, cobber :hatsoff: . Pretty good price too.

Lots of fun ahead.

Finally. Whew! Congratulations. They are not so much light (full octagonal for example) as short in my opinion (not that that has any effect on its shooting). I've said that 36" gun in .50 is about my favorite handling rifle. Just sweet.

For hunting I'd say it is the perfect gun right down to the single trigger. And more-n-purty enough. Good price too...

Ah, it looks like Roo on the barby for your family. Of course you have plenty of rabbits to plink at in Aussie Land too. Good Luck at the range and in the bush mate.

Glad to hear everything finally fell into place. I know you've been looking forward to getting that gun a long time.

Now if your former prime minister would keep his mouth shut in regards to telling our "leaders" that they should follow his lead on enacting gun controls here like you have, all will be well! I hope I never have to wait 1/2 a year for licensing to come through. :shake:

Get a good range rod of some sort. It's not a question of whether a Pedersoli rod will break, it is a question of when, in my opinion.

I now know when mine will break--today. I wasn't pushing down or abusing it. I was using it as a cleaning rod and bumped it up against the low ceiling at the range.

All ex leaders like to be on TV, it makes them feel important! He was actually the best Prime Minister we ever had except for his gun control-over reaction. He actually didn't do a bad thing getting all the semi autos out of the system but he should have rewarded us by relaxing the laws on single shots. It may happen yet.

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that!

Spikebuck, it's not a matter of licencing, rather when we want to purchase a firearm we have to apply to the police for a Permit To Acquire. While the process is the same in all states, the actual time involved varies considerably (for no reason that I know of, other than some police forces like to be, shall we say, difficult? In my case (another State) it took about two weeks for the same piece of paperwork that Kapow waited months for! Once you've got that then you can purchase the firearm and then it must be registered with the police (more $).

So yes, we have to be licenced to own/use a muzzleloader, plus the gun must be registered. Thank you, Mr. Howard.

The problem, by the way, with John Howard's approach is that he doesn't like guns, so his legislation was heavily influenced by what HE wanted. The timing was such that he managed to get pretty much his own way. He even banned pistol ownership completely, until it was pointed out that it prevented any Australian from participating in that part of the Olympics and other international events.
Most agree that something needed to be done to sort out our gun laws, but as usual it went too far. We now have national firearms legislation, but it is "interpreted" and implemented differently by each state. And still there is no national database of gun ownership.

Sorry, I'll climb back in my box, I just get riled up at the mention of little Johnny Howard! Just don't like the man.

Liking the new Rifle Kapow, I'm saving to buy my first Muzzle Loader. I live down the Road a bit near Caboolture, where do you Shoot ? The new Rocksberg Range should be up and going later this Year.

I don't have a kind word for Howard, further comment best kept to myself

regards Jacko

And why is that?

You personally don't care? Can you not be trusted with a firearm? People have to know their place, accept arbitrary limitations imposed on them by, and be subserviant to, the state? They didn't COMPLETELY disarm you so you feel lucky enough to get on your hands and knees to thank them? You accept your role somewhere between serf and freeman as a subject without full rights? You're praising this guy as a saviour -- kissing the hand of your massa!?

That's the same Left-Wing carp that has undermined free people the world over and gave us the imperial Resident of the United States we have today...

Now I'm sorry you got your arm at all no less a more-than-reasonable for you six months. Unbalanced, send your new gun, and all old ones, to the meltdown before you have one of your own please and kill someone indiscriminantly. I mean, if we can save just one life...

I just hope the Commonwealth recognizes that you frequent gun websites and have personally made it clear you intend to kill things with your new gun. Oh, the children!!!

when they came for the trade unionists, I said nothing, because I'm not a trade unionist. when they came for the communists, I said nothing, because I'm not a communist. when they came for the Jews, I said nothing, because I'm not Jewish. when they came for me, there was no one to speak up.

not sure I have the quote down, but it's a slightly more modern repeat of the Thomas Paine, "He who would secure his own liberty must guard even his enemy from oppression..."
:eek:ff ... yes ...

climbing down off the soapbox now

Ummm...guys...lets keep this from getting political and just be happy for the guy getting his rifle ok? Hey Kapow, post some pics of your targets when you shoot them for us. Also let us know what powder/ball/patch combos you find work best when you get them worked out. Congrats on your new smokepole sir. Enjoy!
