I recently picked up a Pedersoli Scout 12ga. I intend to use it as a hunting gun. Given that is has a cylinder choke, is there any type of game I should stay anyway from? (Waterfowl im thinking?)
I still need to pattern it with different load combos to see what works best of course, but wanted to get some opinions from other members here on it's capabilities.
Cheers,,

BP works best a shorter range, think 25 yards, which is not as limiting at it sounds. I did once bring down a pheasant at 50-60 yards, but that was more luck than skill. Waterfowl over decoys should be doable, pass shooting, not so much.

Of course, you actually have to put the shot on target.

Lead or Bismuth for waterfowl or lead prohibited areas. A zillion different ways to load it. Look into the SkyChief load for tighter patterns at longer distances.

edit- I should add that some pass shooting at waterfowl is most certainly possible with larger Bismuth shot and the SkyChief loading method.

None of my smokepole smoothbores are choked. Thing about steel shot…unlike lead, it doesn’t deform in the bore, after you pull the trigger. So steel patterns are denser. A good load of steel T-shot would be great on geese, #4’s solid on ducks…

You should be able to take any of the upland game species; pheasants, chukar, quail…nice day of dove hunting. In my area, Collard Doves (Eurasians) are considered an invasive species, they can be hunted year-round. Dove hunting can be both challenging fun and frustrating…as the flocks zip by and you are trying to reload. If you can get a limit of doves with a front-stuffer…you have arrived.

Solid load of 7 1/2 shot would be great for all of the upland game except pheasants…#6 or #5 would be better on pheasants. On late season pheasants, I like to use steel #4’s, they mostly go strait through…

Small game such as squirrels & rabbits are another perfect species for a 12 bore smokepole.

Best thing to do is get a thrower, and couple friends…go out and have a blast.
