Hi everyone
Question? I am looking for a light weight percussion rifle for off hand target shooting.
the reason is I have a weak left arm and find it hard to hold the 9 lb muzzle loaders I already own ; a zouave and gpr. I have been told that the Pedersolli country hunter is the way to go in
(50 cal)..do any of you have experience with this model... also anyone fitted double set triggers to one?

At almost 6 lbs., the Country hunter does have a lightweight barrel which should be easy to handle. However the barrel has a very fast 1 in 34 inch rate of twist which will probably be much more favorable for shooting conical bullets and sabots, but not patched round balls. :(
You can see some of the specifications for that model here:

The Traditions Deerhunter has a 1 in 48" twist which is better for shooting round balls, and will shoot conical bullets too. It's also listed as weighing 6 lbs., but its plastic stock and shorter 24 inch barrel makes it more compact.
Deerhunters have a reputation for shooting well, and they're less than 1/2 the price of the Country Hunter. MidSouth Supply carries both a wood and blue plastic stocked model with a base price of ~ $168.
Traditions also makes a nickeled Deerhunter model that offers rust resistance and easier clean up too due to the slickness of the finish which is even applied to the inside of the barrel.
I have one that I enjoy shooting. :)

Good luck with whatever model that you decide to buy.

I too don't like 9 lb rifles, and have let a couple go because of weight. Try the Lyman Deerstalker, it is 7 lbs, and has a 1 in 48" twist. I used one for years and really liked it. My wife has the Traditions Deerhunter and she likes it, but personally, it dosen't hold a candle to the Lyman.

I also have a Zouave and GPR and enjoy them for shooting, not carrying. I've been waiting on a Lyman Deerstalker from Midsouth Shooters Supply but they're backordered. The length and weight of Lyman's Deerstalker should be about the same as my Marlin 336.

Maybe a used Renegade? If you look around, some nice ones turn up now and then. I picked one for 50 bucks last year in .50 and all it needed was some TLC and a stock refinish. Shoots great and lighter than my GPR and it had a shorter LOP.
