I've decided to keep my CVA .58 raffle gun. I'll just wait longer to buy my lyman kit or something like that. Since it's a .58 I won't shoot it at steel spinner targets which is what our club shoots only consist of. Guys usually don't like people out there shooting a .58 because they've been known to bust targets up like what happened last Saturday. I've always thought it would be fun to have a peep sight so I figured this would be my oppurtunity to have one since they aren't allowed in club shoots anyways. So do they have any peep sights for these guns like the tang mounted TC ones?

Luie B, I have used a peep sight on my cva 50 for several years now. What I did was attach a piece of steel to the rear sight with screws and made a fairly large peep sight,( sometimes refered to as a shadow peep) on the rear sight . I really like it it works real well and is very auccrate, I have killed about 12 deer with the gun since putting the peep sight on. You dont have to mount one on the tang to get a better sight. yours hounddog

:v Luie, Lyman has a tang mounted sight model 57ML that mounts using the existing holes in the tang. A cheaper way to go is to make your own "lolly-pop" sight from a thumb-screw with a 1/16 to 1/8th inch hole, it mounts to the tang close to the separation of the tang to hooked breach with a tapped hole that you provide. It needs to be far enough forward so you don't knock your eye out! :nono: There are some other peeps that mount into the rear sight dove-tail if your gun has one, made by Williams. They also have one that requires tapped holes into the barrel. The important consideration is that with any tang mounted sight of any kind be either a folding ladder or far enough forward that you don't damage your eye. :v

I have a TC with their vernier sight and one with TC's peep sight. I don't like either for hunting but I do like them for just shooting. Boy, if I were you I would diffidently keep the 58. They aren't that common to come by. Try the peep sight you may like it. You can always remove it.

A good peep sight comes with more than one hole to look through  . The Lyman for instance has two different diameter screw-in peeps where you change-out the peep depending upon the lighting conditions, and you can unscrew the peep altogether and you're left with a fairly nice "ghost ring" rear sight that's excellent for when you can hardly see at all (when the deer start coming out first thing in the morning or at last light towards dusk).

My son LOVES the Lyman peep I installed on his rifle, and has won several competitions with it as well as earned his NRA Expert in ML Rifle.

Do you know anyone with a M-1 Garand or other military rifle that has a peep so you could try it out? There's a reason those Garands can be shot out to 600 yards no problem! That beautiful rear peep sight!

Dave

Amen on that Garand peep. My father in law has one and we both shot minute of silver dollar at 100 yards with it. He's 86 years old.

I plan to get a tc peep from midsouth soon they are listed for 52.00. I would hope to accomplish hitting a silver dollar at 100 yards with peep sights by the time I am 86. I love the tc rifles I own but the sights need work. I like the old renegade sights better than the huge bead and narrow notch. I am trying out the peep with the big bead if not I need to find a nice brass bead like on my green mountain barrels.

Button buck I also like the renegade sights. Seems easier to see for me. Larry Wv

You can play around and do the match stick peep sight. Cut a match stick the with of your rear sight color it black with a sharpie and super glue it to the top of the rear sight. Ream out the match stick with a small drill bit to what ever size you like. I have been doing this with old milsurp rifles for years.

ive tried something lately that works as well for me as anything,i take a small chainsaw file (round) and work down the v notch till it looks like a hole without a top and it is pretty close to a rear peep. i replaced the blade in front with a small round head screw and then line up the (dot) with the rear (HOLE) WORKS FOR ME ANYWAY!! regards, mike

Here's my solution. It does involve drilling and tapping one 10x32 hole in the tang but the sight itself is just a thumb screw with an aperture hole drilled on center.

I made a thumb screw sight yesterday took me under an hour including bluing it. The match stick worked good but having the sight closer to my eye is much better. I have tech sights on my 10-22 and all so shoot M1 Grand and a M4 carbine with iron sights often so i am right at home with this style sights on my front stuffer. The thumb screws came four to a bag so i made three up with diferent size holes to try out :hatsoff:

thanks, i like that idea. functional, simple, and a clean install. hats off on this one! :hatsoff:

thats clever as all get out! what type of nut i used for that jam nut?
It's actually a sling swivel nut intended to be embedded inside the forearm of a rifle. It looks a bit neater than a hex nut but a hex will work as well.
