Peep sight on pistol, [has / or] is this done? Cap and ball' single shot like a trappers etc.?

No reason you couldn't put a nice aperture sight on a ml pistol - might have to drill and tap the tang to mount one but a lyman sight intended for rifles would probably work just fine - though you may want a larger aperture as the sight will be farther from your eye. Should be able to get replacement, screw-in apertures to suit.

I'm not sure it would work. Even with the larger aperture, it is going to be difficult to pick up the front sight.

The use of a peep sight on a handgun has had mixed results.

There is a company that makes a peep for modern handguns, One-Hole, I believe.

Well, one consideration is that if a two handed hold is allowed/used then you can place the aperture closer to the eye - but then you get the muzzle that much closer too :shocked2:

This is what silhouette shooters do.

Have just mounted a williams dovetail ghost peep sight, has el and win adj. About same lenght as orig. It helps a lot. thanks to all

I had an original late percusion single shot pistol with a peep sight. Arguable if it is original to the gun or not, but none the less it had one.

It's possible but will be hard to keep focused due to extended eye relief. The mention of a ghost ring is possible but it will have a much wider opening, closer to 1/4 inch. A peep sight is designed for target shooting and their small openings assume your eye will be in close proxemity to the sight itself.

While I've never seen it on a muzzleloading pistol, I know the concept works. I shot silhuette for many years using a peep sight equipped Remington XP-100 pistol in .308. I've always had issues with vertical stringing when using peeps, but you can sure get good groups with them.

If you give it a try, please let us know what sight you used and how you attached it. I'm somewhat interested in trying this also.

 Frankly I have been shooting competition pistol since 1958---iron sights and dot scopes, International and Bullseye. I could not imagine the difficulty with dealing with a peep as a rear sight on any type of pistol with the exception of bench rest shooting and possible metallic silhouette which is also under the constraints of using some form of a prone or back position. Those sights on a pistol just move too much for the use of a peep IMHO, you may also get away with it using a Weaver two point double handed approach. :hmm:

I've never tried them on any other type of pistol, but on the center grip XP-100, they're very easy to use, even one handed. The gun itself has good balance though, and remains pretty stable. I think a muzzle heavy black powder pistol would probably make a stable enough platform for them to work well also though. The Trapper would probably be a good choice alright. It's muzzle heavy and stable, points very well, and has a nice trigger. If I ever have time for another project, I may give it a go also, just out of curiosity.
