One of the other auction sites lists a percussion nipple charger for sale :shocked2: . Has anyone ever used one of these or is this another "great idea" that really is a waste of time/money? :youcrazy:

I had never heard of one so did a search and found Pedersoli makes one. Looks kind of like a flint pan charger except it must have a cone shaped interior to fit over the nipple. When I was shooting cap guns, I just pulled the nipple and put powder in the flash channel if it needed a "boost".

I've had one for 35 years never needed/used it. Thought it might be helpful if I forgot to put powder in first.

Don't have one so this is just speculation, but...

It seems to me the flash hole in the nipple would have to be large in order to pass the powder granules at any reasonable rate (more than a trickle), and a flash hole that big would only be found in a worn out nipple.

I think.

I have a couple of cans of 4f hanging around, plus a pan charger. I just put some into the pan charger and dumped from that into a new nipple. Fuggedaboutit. Narry a granule made it through the hole in the nipple and out the bottom. And 3f? :rotf:

If there was any value to dropping powder into the nipple above the constriction, go for it. But if you're trying to get enough powder past the nipple to resolve a dry ball..... Fuggedaboutit!!! :bull:

Sounds like a waste of money to me. That's why they make the co2 ball dischargers.

Just another gimmick.

I did the same thing mazo kid did when I used cap guns for hunting a few moons ago, only took a minute or two and it always made sure the gun went off in a hunting situation.

It just something to sell to people that don't know any better. "Priming" the nipple has been recognized as a mistake for at least 150 years.

Actually, it's probably a good idea. Look at it this way: If you were able to get any significant amount of powder (say 2 or 3 grains) through the nipple flash hole, then you will have determined the most likely reason the cap didn't ignite the main charge - the nipple is worn out! :rotf:

In "The Cap Lock Muzzleloading Rifle" they are mentioned as a fairly common accessory, at least for high end target rifles, at the last 1/2 of the 19th C.

Seems to me... :hmm:

That if this fancy device allows the blast from a very small charge of powder to easily pass through a tiny hole in the nipple to ignite the main charge...

Then why wouldn't Murphy's Law -- or physics -- take over and allow the BLAST FROM A MUCH LARGER MAIN CHARGE to easily pass through a tiny hole in the nipple to ignite the shooter?!?!?
Not something I want that close to my face, thanks... I'll pass... :surrender:
