Was looking through the Track OW website and noticed some verbage in there wads sections recommending their use in pistols. Just wondering what you all thought of using the 1/8" overpowder cards in my Ruger Old Army. Was also thinking of stacking a couple in to get my ball close to mouth of the cylinder (re. accuracy) rather then cornmeal or the like. Anyone ever try this?

I have done that - stacking wads. I make my own from 'duro-felt' I also put a small drop of Go-Jo white atop the wad when loading (any lube-your favorite- will do fine, that's just what I use) my revolvers.

I use Ox-Yoke wonder-wads. In my Walker, in the loading stand, I pour in 50 gr. of 3F, then cover the powder with a wonder-wad, then the .454 ball goes over the powder. The Walker was meant to hold a 60 gr. charge back in the old days. The wad does a real nice job. No extra lube, no fuss, no muss :) . Only use one, still a nice cloud of smoke. Works just as good in my son's 1860 New Model Army with 20-25 gr. charge. I never did shoot cereal thru my guns, and I don't intend to either. All the best, Dave

I have not tried using shotgun like hard cards in the revolvers. Got a couple thousand pre-lubbed felt wads a few years ago in a deal, still working on using those up. Can't see why the hard card would not work. I assume that the card is dry therefore you would have to put some lube over the ball to keep the fouling loose.

I use lubed felt Wonder Wads as overpowder wads with good results.

I don't really see any advantage to using hard overpowder cards and then adding lube over the ball as opposed to the lubed overpowder felt wads.

It's fairly standard now to use lubed wads in percussion revolvers. Being an idiot from the 'old school', I still use a chamber full of powder and a touch of grease on top. There has to be somebody running against the grain...I missed the meeting and got elected! :haha:

This is the way I load too. It's the way I was taught when I was a kid, and it has worked for me for many years. I find that the lube over the ball keeps the fouling soft and the cylinder turning easily.
