My vote is a New England fowler. Can't go wrong.
They're right about the New England Fowler's. They're graceful and surprisingly sweet handling.

Doubles are great for all the reasons you mentioned. Except in PA we can not use a double for big game in a muzzleloader season, and a muzzleloader must be flintlock in the late season.
Doubles are great for turkey, small game and waterfowl.
