Permalyn finish question

I'm down to the last few coats on the Woodsrunner. What I'm seeing is way too glossy for my tastes. Looks like some kind of epoxy dipped finish. What I am looking for is a deep satin finish. What would be the best way to proceed and obtain the subdued finish I'm looking for? Would a hand rubbed coat of Tried and True work with Permalyn?

Take some fine sandpaper to apply the last coat, this will leave the finish a little dull. Scuff with 0000 steel wool and then apply furniture wax. Permalyn is some pretty good finish.

I'll follow that suggestion. Thinking of some really fine (600ish) wet/dry paper.

I uset only permalyn. I agree on the glossy. I always take 0000 steel wool lightly rub back the gloss. You will see spots that are now more dull than others. Just take a paste wax or what I use is rubbing compound that's used on cars and just rub it ok n and buff with rag and the finish is perfect.

This is what I use also but I use water and a felt pad. I rub very lightly and not in one area too long then wipe off and see my progress - if ok then I move on to another area. Rottenstone will cut faster than you think it will.

How long are you guys steel wooling it letting it cure/harden before you hit it with the steel wool? Steel wool between coats looks like it's been steel wool'd, not a fan of that being the final finish at all, that's why I ask.

I'll use 4/0 steel wool between coats (rub lightly) after the 4th THIN coat. Then I'll apply 4 more coats and do it again with the steel wool. I'll then apply 2 to 4 more coats and let it dry for about one week after that I will use rottenstone mixed with water and rub out the shine then apply a good wax.

The real trick is applying a thin coat every time.
