I like using bear oil, Murphy's and peroxide in 3 parts, but I had stopped using the peroxide in my rifle because I was told it hardens the corners in the lands and grooves. My question is what about in a smooth bore? Obviously it doesn't have lands an grooves but could it harden the surface? :hmm:

I use peroxide and windsheild washer fluid occasionaly on my lock and flashgaurd when I really want to get the goo out. I also use it in the barrel of my smoothbore, but have learned to dismount the barrel if I am going to do this because it fizzes up, out, and over the muzzle and pours down the sides, which results in much swearing and refinishing of expensive chunks of walnut....

:results:

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizing agent in a 90% water solution. Rust in a bottle. It always gives me the heebie-jeebies to think of pouring that in a steel gun barrel, smooth or rifled. It will also bleach out the wood if it seeps into it, as StumBuff noted. There's plenty of other things to use that work as well with less danger; tap water & a bore brush or mop, for instance. Just 'cause it sudsies up doesn't mean it's helping cut the fouling. Warm water and Murphy's Oil Soap cut that just fine. Now, if you had a lot of bacteria in your barrel, it would be worth using it, maybe.

The ammonia in washer fluid/Windex will attack brass parts, causing stress cracking with enough exposure. Chlorox attacks stainless steel the same way.

Do all you fellers leave that concoction in the barrel over night? :what: I've been usin' Murphy's, peroxide and alcohol fer years and ain't never hardened my rifling or rusted my parts.

After yer done cleanin', dry it and wipe it down with oil and you won't have a problem. :imo: I don't leave the parts wet with it and put it up.

Allow me to rephrase what I said earlier. By "occasionally" use in the barrel, I mean like once a year if I did something stupid like come home and put Thwack down and my butt into the chair before i clean the old girl.

AFTER USING A SOLUTION LIKE THAT, I ALWAYS OIL THE BARREL TO PREVENT RUSTING!!!

I really should have mentioned that before, I guess--WOOPS! Pay no attention to the buffler behind the curtain!

If you are going to use ANYTHING harsh, PLEASE oil your stuff afterwards. Usually I use only cold water to scrubby me tube out for fear that hot water will corrode.

Sorry about that! Nothing worse than bad advice.... :youcrazy:
