Anybody going? I intend to drive from here, camp overnight in, say, Grants, N.M., and then on. I've never seen the country down in that part, and think it would be fun. My wife will fly down that weekend, and we'll follow the same path back.
I haven't shot my lancaster with the roklok on it yet, so I gotta get busy.

R U yacking about the Phoenix NMLRA Shoot. If the Powder Guy come from Arkansas, I will pay him a visit.

Last couple of years it was not worth coming to Ben Avery due to as the Quality of Trader Row, Trade Quit coming because the did not make money, and it did not warrant the expenditure of GAS for the 40 mile trip round trip for me from home.

Last couple of Phoenix Gun Show had no promotion of the shoot by the NMLRA, so I think it is just a chance for a few land of Snow, and Rain Die Hards to get a break from the East of the Mississippi weather.

NMLRA is doing no promotion of the Western Shoot except to its members. So that is why there are no new NMLRA MEMBERS OUT WEST IMHO!

IMHO, I would recommend a stay in Taos, NM on your way down. Pretty historical in the Southwestern fur trade scheme of things and a really nice place. My wife and I have stopped there a number of times on our way back and forth between Phoenix & Denver, although we weren't camping.

I love to drive and see the country, but am not enamored with Interstates. This route cuts off south of Raton from I-25 and ties back in to catch I-40 at Albuquerque. The road is well paved and keeps to the forests and streams. It routes through Angel Fire, NM, which is a really nice area and who can go wrong visiting a town with a name like that and which also is noted for holding the snow shovel sledding championships (wild; I saw a short about it on TV).

With just a little superficial "Googling", I found numerous camping spots, like the one example below.

Just a thought! :v

Thanks, deano. I am quite familiar with the Taos/Angelfire area, I used to stop at the VietNam Veterans Memorial in Angelfire every time we went down-usually at least once a year. And I know about the campground you're talking about, like you say it's pretty close to the road.
I'm thinking I'd like to camp about halfway, but I've yet to investigate campgrounds, I like the ones that have hook ups for electricity so I don't run my battery down.
Thanks for your efforts.

I've been considering going up for a day or two. Easy for me though. I live in Tucson, about two drive, and I have family in Mesa, just east of Phoenix. Never been before.

Do it once just to say you saw the only 1,000 RANGE West of the Mississippi that is not a Military Range. Plus you can buy a Ben Avery Hat & T-shirt as a souvenir of your visit. :applause:
