What all ya trapping? Looks like a good spot for bobcats. I ran a line for coyotes and cats here up until this year. Since we moved i haven't any idea where to trap around here yet. Maybe next year again. Good luck with your sets.

i'm trapping fisher in that area.caught 2 right below the rock ledge last year. there are a few cats around here but i don't have enough time in the week to concentrate on them. here is a pic of a fisher i caught belkow the ledge last year. this ledge is about 150 feet high.

I agree. That mount looks nice. I'm glad you posted a pic, because I had no clue what a fisher was. I don't think we have any of those here in the flatlands. At least I've never run across any.

Nice pictures Ken.
What is the difference in a "fisher", a "fisher cat", and a "weasel"....

I hear the terms used almost interchangeable, but I'm still not clear in my mind what the difference is, if any. Guess I need to do a little research!

Thanks,
Russ
BTW....Long time no speak....(I bought a Penn. Hunter from you about three or so years ago....turns out to be my most accurate muzzleloader when "pampered" just right...It's good to have your knowledge on the forum, Welcome.)

Hey Russ, You asked, "What is the difference in a "fisher", a "fisher cat", and a "weasel"...."

Well a fisher and a fisher cat are the same critter. But a weasel is a lot smaller although pound for pound just as vicious a character.

Am I correct Ken? :peace:

I'm like Screech Rat, I've never heard of such a creature, either. Looks like the sort of varmit you wouldn't want to be upset at you. Thanks for the pics.Nice mount.

Those are some really nice mounts...

We have fisher here where I live and you do not want to run across one of them when they are in a bad mood. Pound for pound they are one tuff little creature.

A couple years back the fishers were really thick because no one wanted to trap them. Trappers were not making any money on the pelts. The locals just howled laughing when a tourist camping in the area came to the local watering hole and complained that their cats were missing. She tied them out so they would not run away and when she went to get them, only a bloody leash was still there but the animal was gone....Puppies are another favorite of them when they are hungry, although they seem to have more respect for the dog family then the cat family.

I was walking down a trail through the woods one morning headed to my favorite trout hole when I came face to face with a big female fisher. She was not friendly at all. A real attitude if you know what I mean. I finally headed the other way. I think she had young near by and that was why she was so aggressive, but I was not going to argue with her.

Actually we have all the weasel family here in Wisconsin. We have weasels (both long and short tail), pine martins, fishers, mink, badgers, and some claim they have seen wolverines but I could not confirm that. All of the others I have ran into one time or another. Actually I had a weasel that lives in my garage every winter and he is more them welcome. I never have a mouse problem at all.... ::

the only weasels we have here in the Texas Panhandle are 2 legged and hang out in law offices....

Hey, quit insulting weasels! Everyone knows lawyers are invertebrates.

fishers are often refred to as fisher cats, must be what the old timers use to call them. they can be mean little guys!! take a look at my post on general interest, i just bumped it to the top. it will give you a good idea of the fishers size in relation to dogs, weasels, mink, otter and beaver. i have only caught one this year which is a real bummer as i had promiseda couple friends nice ones to get mounted. would also love a nice fisher mountainman style hat!

My wife has one cage trap in her trap line and it's down by the hen house right in the middle of town. She likes to get the foxes before they get her chickens. After an 8 month break without a catch she's had three in as many weeks, there was a young un in it this very morning. It's all a bit cold and clinical though, no buckskins, smokepoles and wildereness :(

Great pics and congrats on your trapping, I always enjoyed it, although I was never THAT good. Just mainly trapped small creeks for their cousin the mink.
