The local gun shop has a Pietta 1851 with box (says Caeblla's on box), it is used and appears to be pretty clean. I have several C&B revolvers but no Pietta's, are they decent quality?
Thanks
Tom

The quality is decent. They aren't an Uberti but they aren't $300 either. Generally require a little smithing to smooth them out. Check Cabela's on price they were runniing a sale on this one and several others.

I have heard the same thing on the Piettas since I've been on this board. Not as slick or may need smithing to run well. The Pietta guns quality must have come up quite a bit in the past couple of years. I bought a 1851 Navy .36 cal. new a few years ago from Cabela's. I had to send the first one back due to the cylinder wouldn't come off the arbor after I first shot it. The replacement sent to me was and is slick as snot. No problems. Unless it's a screeming deal, Save some money and buy a new one. Cabela's will exchange it no questions asked.

I had exactly the same problem, except I purchased mine new in the box from the fellow that had bought it from Cabelas. The cylinder cannot be removed. And, the barrel to frame alignment is way off, mismatched with an angle cut. Then, because I was not the original purchaser, Cabelas would not stand behind what they sold even though the revolver had never been fired, neither by the original purchaser or myself. It still sits in the box, unfired, a real piece of Cabelas.

Try disassembling it and see if any part inside is jamming the cylinder.

I bought a new Pietta 1851 and am very satisfied with it. I had to reshape the bolt to make the cylinder lock up and polish the trigger-hammer contact to make the pull smooth.

Piettas used to be, well, simply stated, inferior to Ubertis. But that's changed since about 2003 or so. While they MAY not compare across the board with Uberti on finish (meaning you can find recent manufacture Piettas that are actually superior to Uberti on occasion) they do compete in overall quality. Both companies are fully capable of producing the occasional lemon, however, so inspect carefully. Look for a date stamp later than BT, and as usual in a used bp gun, condition is everything.

at my work we sell them there ok. noticed only one the cylnder wouldn't come off. but with some work it pulled loose seems like the pin was to fat for the cylnder. so we sent it back. other then that they shoot good but take some time to brake them in.
