I thought about it for several days :yakyak: Then the day arrived, and went to town on a nearly new pistol with Birchwood Casey Blue and Rust Remover.

An hour later I had a gun I wanted

I just wanted an older looking gun, that will age even more the way I want it too! I will be working on aging the grip a little more.

Heck your only 39, you only had to wait 60 years or so and you would of had it. :haha:
Looks cool, ya have to pay for that at some gun companies.

Hey Mulebrain , looks great! did you just follow the directions on the rust and blue remover when you used it or did you go through another process ? This is somthing I may like to try on my 1860

Looks good! Did the same with one of mine using Naval Jelly. Results were similar but that stuff evens wipes out the color of the case hardening...surprise! As for the grips, #0000 steel wool will tone it down and soften the looks but still leave protection. Otherwise, remove the finish and use a candle or alcohol lamp to burn the edges all around. Just don't refinish too shiny again afterwords. Mine was an old Replica Arms 1860 which I loved till some low-life decided it'd look better on his wall! :cursing:

I used the remover, and just used paper towels. I did not leave the remover on the case hardened area for very long, so I could retain some of it.

My original intention was to use a browning solution, but after seeing it like this, that idea was scrapped.

Browning would give it a real aged look.

Well,

Almost every original example I have seen is not brown at all. Most look in the white with pitted metal and such.

I will however keep this pistol outside some of the time, and it will get some rusting naturally.

I had/have some original percussion guns but only one of them was in the white. The rest were/are brown. Most of my older centerfires are brown too.

the next one you get that you want to change the apperance of send it to me and I'll age it by shooting a couple years for ya!

I must say Mule brain after seeing this thread, it's rekindled my interest in making a gunslinger rig for display. I really like the look you archived and hope to do the same.

I don't know dude I think you should have stripped the barrel and cylinder but left the frame alone. All of the color case-hardening is gone!Bummer!

Yeah, but a well worn gun with it's case hardening intact just doesn't look right. When I did my Colt, I agonized over this (for about 5 minutes) then erased the case colors. Changed the appearance from bogus to a coherent aged look. Gonna age it some more, too. It has a slick action and shoots very well. People see it at the range and figure it for a beater. Really opens their eyes when it hits old bowling pins at 50 and 75 yards.

Looking good there Mule Brain!
Looks like you got her age to the point you can let "Father Time" step in! :rotf: :rotf:
