Firstly, I appologize if this has already been asked.

I know that pillow ticking clothe comes in different colors. My question is: do the different colors represent different thicknesses? Thanks in advance for your comments.

No, for example, Wally world sells the same ticking in three different colors (red blue and tan) that are identical. I also once bought some rather thin ticking at Wally's that had a blue stripe but the blue was much darker than their more common blue. That was a long time ago and I've not see it since.

Some guys measure their patch material and others dont. I'm in the "don't" camp. I try many various patch materials with several different balls until a good one is found.

No they ain't the same. Even from shippment to shippment of the same color.

If you want consistancy, you'll need to bring a caliper with you and measure thickness.

I suppose if using a micrometer might show some minor differences but of the many purchases I've made at Wally's there has never been any diff in performance.

They also sell a heavy duck in several different colors that is a bit thicker than the ticking they sell. It has been a great patch material for my .45 and .54.

So very true Necchi. I find it is rare to get two bolts exactly the same thickness regardless of color of the stripes. Most ticking varies from .013 to .017. When you consider that you have a layer on each side of the ball that comes out to a variance of up to .008 .

You Bet!
It has to do with the machines that weaves the stuff and their raw product. Moisture of the cotton, abient temps and humidity at the mill that day, and the operator/supervisor running it and their crew. They control the speed of the run, and as long as it's within the tolerances requested faster is better.
That's why it's a good idea to buy several yards once you find some that ya like.
I can't remember, but I think I bought 5 yards of a denim that's been good, I'll use the last of that this season.
I'm pretty fussy, but not incorragable, I'll hit the 2 fabric shop's, Crafts direct and the Wally we have here in town and find something close to my spec's. Then buy another 5-6 yards. I've learned tight works best for me, I can adjust the lube according to Dutch.

Does anyone know anything thicker than cotton drill or pillow ticking? All the pillow ticking I've ever found is way too thin. Probably thinner than .015. Thanks.

The cheaper all cotton canvas at fabric stores. We just cut some up into strips this evening after washing the sizing out of it. Measures twenty thou's.

Flannel, denim, canvas. All are cotton and are plenty thick.

Make sure you are finding mattress tick and not the thinner pillor tick. I get 0.018" and 0.021" at Joanne's Fabrics (a chain store).

Thanks. I'll write the names of those fabrics down and next time I go to Joann's fabric in quincy I'll ask the people there and take a look at each type of fabric.
