I just purchased a yard of pillow ticking to make my own patches. I was wondering if I should run this material through a laundry cycle to soften it up a bit, or use it as is. Any thoughts?

People use it either way with equal results...

The stiffness you may feel in the ticking is starch (sizing), this is what you would be washing out if you choose to launder the material...

If you do, cold/warm water and line dry it, otherwise it will shrink... (100% cotton)

I wash mine BEFORE I cut my patches, or you may experience some fraying along the edges...

Agree,, wash first.
Softens the material to let it conform better to the ball, and it seems to "lube" better for me too.
AND it smells better. :m2c:

For those that wash their ticking first, as many of us do, how do you wash it?

Do you use soap powder or plain water?

I just use plain water...

I have thrown it in separate with just plain water, and if there was a load of wash going in at the time, I have thrown it in with that. If you spit patch it tastes better if you wash it first.

I have always wondered if "spit patchers" really put cinnamon and cloves in their wash water??

I gotta try that sometime. Might be better than Red Man or Copenhagen, don't ya think?
Red pillow tickin patches, and Red Man...what a way to fly! :redthumb:

It depends on the pillow ticking you buy. Some of it is starched & some of it is not. I don't wash either one & have no problems with either one.

Ox yoke says don't wash theirs but it tastes terrible ,if your a spit patcher, so I wash it anyway, with soap. If you don't use spit , it probably doesn't make a difference.
