What is the safest way to remove a pinned Bess barrel. Should the tang bolt be removed first or the pins? Or does it matter? Thanks.

i've never had a pinned barrel till i finish my lancaster but i think i would clamp it with some heavy spring clamps or c-clamps and do it the way ya put it in the stock when building it :m2c: ...........bob

I start by removing the tang bolt and both sideplate bolts. Before the sideplate bolts are out completely, I tap them to push the lock out of the mortise. Then I remove the pins from the breech toward the muzzle. Generally the barrel will come loose at the muzzle easily then is a little sticky in the middle. If you do turn the gun upside down and tap it a bit to loosen the barrel, always be careful to not strain/pry the forestock. If the mortises for the underlugs come all the way through the ramrod channel, you can help coax it there.
