i have a davis hawk kit and I was wondering where there was pics or ideas for designs on the handles and inlays, besides buying a 60-100 dollar book.
thanks for any help

If you google " hand made hawks, ( or tomahawks), you should find some good sites. I found this one which shows some outstanding craftsmanship.

GW: That is a terrific sight. I was looking for it when I googled tomahawks, but found the other site, first, and offered it, since the man making those hawks is so obviously a skilled artist. This is a wonderful collection of historic hawks, and should be of interest to anyone want to make a decent replica of a pipe hawk. The best part is that it is free, and our poster doesn't have to spend $60.00 for a book. Get the book to look at by going through you local library. If they don't have it, the can get it through the inter library loan service. They will find a copy for you to look at. All you need is the title, and author's name.

Thanks guys those are great sights. i will have more questions when I start putting it to gether, for sure how the head attaches.

Is yours a pipehawk or a straight hawk? Pipe hawks usually have a leather washer between the head and the leather - I've got a pic or two that will help show you how........

John - here's how I fit the leather gasket - I used braintan, but chamois will work as well...

The head slides on over the strip of leather -

Once the head is fully in place trim the leather -

Here's one idea for deco - the fancy curly maple handle is fitted up with Sterling silver bands and end cap. It has an antler mouthpiece and end plug.

Hope that helps.....
