I'm building a Kentucky pistol. The barrel is in, the breechplug is in, the ramrod hole is drilled The muzzle cap is on. Now it's the butt cap... They gave it a good name, because it's a pain in the butt to inlett! I probably have close to 20 hours already and not there yet. Just thought I'd share...George F.

I can understand your frustration...I also can't
help you with your problem...I tried to make and
install one of those stirrip butt caps..like seen
on all of the early pystols...I did one for a 22
cal flintlock on the pattern of a French pocket
pystol..That one seemed to take years...I think my
problem like yours is finding information on the
subject...who does it and how????? I have made a
lot of Kentucky pystols and have never put a butt
cap on any of them. Reason being that the first
pattern I ever saw didn't have any and I stayed
with that....

I am currently installing a buttcap on an English Dragoon pistol. It's the kind with the extensions that go almost all the way to the lock panels. What a pain!!!

To compound the issue it is steel instead of brass like the originals.

The proper way to inlet them is to bend the extensions out enough to inlet the cap flush, then inlet the extensions.

The steel ones are so thick and hard to bend, that I'm having a really rough time. I'm just cutting and hoping.

Most think that a pistol would be easier to build than a rifle..... I'm not one of those people. :cursing:

I would think with so many made there would be
more on the subject..I hammered mine into a cup
like thing that folded up the sides. Keeping going
up equal was difficult and the brass couldn't be
too thick...and bending it could be harder because
the brass could hammer harden..There had to be a
method because so many being made in so many
different countries...The simple cap could be hard
enough to make and do......

All I can say is I'll take pics next time I have to build one. I don't think I could explain it where anyone would have any idea what I was saying. :haha:
