When was the pistol grip type stock first used? Was there ever a flintlock rifle made with a pistol grip type stock?

In the Track catalog there's a book: 'British Military Flintlock Rifles 1740-1840' that shows a pistol grip stock on the cover. Gun looks like a Baker carbine. The pistol grip might be an add on such as they used to put on the original straight stocked '03 Springfield to make a sniper rifle. (Picture is too small to make out in the catalog.)
