Hi I havnt put any pistols together before and I have a .54 smoothbore 7/8" oct barrel that I was going to put to use, would it be okay (proper) for rear and front sights or just a front blade this would be a flint version

Nobody replied yet?
I would say that a lone front or a combination front/rear is A-ok.
I have seen quite sophisticated sights (rear) on really old stuff that would most definitely predate your build.
The only thing is to remember to make things smaller.
A lone front blade or bead does look very clean however, and might go great with a smoothbore.
If you do build it, make sure you post some pictures for us to check out!

I thank you for your opinion ,I'm sure i'll build it , probably some time after hunting season . I'll try and post some pics when done

The pistol I'm just finishing up only has the front sight. It shows up in this picture:

It is the Sterling Silver sight from TOTW and is soldered in place.

Because the gun does not have a rear sight, I used the slot in the tang screw as a rear signt to shoot the group you see in the target. The problem is, this target was hanging below the one I was shooting at. The range was 15 yards and the group was exactly 11 1/2 inches low.
I'm in the process of installing a home made rear sight now.

I think the need for a rear sight depends on what the gun is meant to do. In my guns case, I do want to shoot target groups.
If it was more of a defensive gun (like I think most of the original guns were) the front sight is more of a visual reference for pointing than it is a actual sighting device so the absence of a rear sight is acceptable.

That's anice pistol Zonie thanks for your imput, also nice group even if it was the wrong target !

HHHHHMMMMM, sounds like another pistol shooter at the monthly powderhorn matches. I have mine done and will be shooting it in Dec. I just slapped mine together and did not spend a lot of time on it but it shoot very well. I hear Mike has one as well.
This should be intresting

If I (ever) get my target pistol completed I would like to take part in postal matches. The range I shoot at is open on weekends only from April into October, so it'll be a while yet.

My pistol will use the same components that Zonie chose (small Siler lock, Rayl barrel in .40 cal) but if all comes out well will sport a sawhandle stock with thumbrest.
