Plastic Patches

Has anyone used those "plastic patches" with round balls? They're made by Hornady. See Hornady Muzzleloading Accessories. How were your results?

Years ago they had something called a Poly Patch, basically a (Shuuuddeeeerr) sabot for rd balls. At the time i was fairly new to muzzleloading and tried some. They worked ok, but a think you will get better accuracy, and be safer, with a cloth patch. There was a chance for the ball to come loose with those things and possibly cause a barrel obstruction if it didn't roll out of the barrel. That and they were not a real tight fit, so there was a chance for the Poly Patch and ball to move forward off the charge. Not a good situation. Stick with the stuff that has workd for a few hundred years and you can't go wrong.

I read the same thing.. they really put plastic fowling in the barrel. Of course plastic has came a long way in sabots..

I also would not bother with it. I would stick to what works.

I use plastic wads in my cowboy action black powder shotgun loads. They melt and make a heck of a mess in the barrel. If those plastic patches do the same, I wouldnt use them. The break action shotgun is easy enough to clean, but a muzzleloader would be a pain in the rear to get all that stuff out of. (looks like big strings of black snot when I spray it out of the 12g barrels)

If they dont melt, I guess they'd be ok. I dont see what the advantage would be though.

What kind of powder and load are you using in that shotgun? Iuse the plastic shot cups in my sxs 12 and they don't melt. In fact they can be used again.
However eaven with the plastic shot cups I still haven't got a pattern acceptable for turkey and the season opens the 15th!

Im using Winchester AA hulls, and red wads, over anywhere from 55 to 75gr 2f goex. Usually #7 or 8 shot, about 1 ounce or 1-1/8. They really do melt. You might be using a better cup or somthing. Which one are you using?

I use the Win. AA wads in my double barrel .12 ga. and they don't melt much. They do leave a little bit of plastic in the barrel after a day of shooting. but it comes right out with a .12 ga bore brush.

I've heard that something like spray carb cleaner works fairly well in removing melted plastic fouling.

I've never had any problem removing it with just water and a bore brush.
