Hi - new to this forum and was directed here by a post on the forum @ gunboards.com. I am wondering if someone could shed some light on a recent longrifle i received. Here is my post on gunboards.
"Hi - i recently received an old rifle to present to my husband on his 50th birthday. I was told it was straight out of the attic and used during the American Revolution. When checking it out further, i realize the math/ages of owners that i was told doesn't add up to that era. Since it was from a friend of a friend - i believe she may have missed a generation or two... However, another friend told me it's definitely pre-civil war...It is a percussion rifle but i believe it was converted from flintlock. It's pretty dirty but appears in pretty decent condition. I have looked everywhere for marks of some kind but am not having any luck. It is a .45 cliber with an octagon barrel. The wood appears to be curly maple under all that dirt . the percussion nipple is bent inward but it is there. The patchbox has really prettty details. I am interested to know if anyone can tell me who made it by looking at the patchbox and other parts. i have attached several pictures of the rifle and parts...Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!"

I'm not sure how to add pictures here so here is the link to that post: http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?225331-Please-help-with-ID-of-Pennsylvania-Long-Rifle
I was told it is from around 1835-1855 with possible earlier parts. The guys over at that site were great with filling in some gaps and suggested i try here and someone may have more information. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

YIKES! - it doesn't like going there from here. Could you copy and paste this url into your browser: http: ///showthread.php?225331-Please-help-with-ID-of-Pennsylvania-Long-Rifle
Hoepfully, you can see the pictures here. I believe you have to be a member of that forum to see them but i don't know how else i can post the pics. I do not subscribe to a hosting service and when i try to load using my c: drive for the url, they don't appear.
- i'm kinda at a loss for next step :idunno:

Several problems here.
I'm not a member of that forum so I can't see the photos.

Our Forum is set up to show photos which are uploaded to one of the several photo hosting places like Photobucket.
This Forum cannot show photos that are located on a persons hard drive nor can it upload photos from a persons hard drive for storage on this site (like the site you referenced apparently can do).

If you join Photobucket, (which is free and they do not sell your address to anyone) you can upload your pictures to your "home", then copy the "IMG" address you will find below the photos and paste it into your posts here on our site.

As an aside, Photobucket is a neat place to store pictures because there are a lot of forums that will show photos stored there.

Also, because your rifle sounds like it is a pre 1865 original, I'm moving your topic to the "Firearms Research" forum which is reserved for antique firearms.

In trying to keep this a secret from my significant other, so i wasn't at home to do the upload. I think I got it now though:

BTW, thank you Zonie for moving my post. I was unsure of the right forum and this looks like the right place. I appreciate your assistance

The gun is in very nice condition. I would not try to remove the years of aging on the wood or
brass. You will diminish it's value significantly
by doing so. The patchbox and sideplate should make this gun readily identifiable to someone who has Chandlers Patchboxes book. Look closely near the sights for faint signature or initials. I do not think the gun was ever a flintlock as there is
only one hole on the sideplate which appears to be original. I'm pretty sure I've seen that patchbox before in Chandlers book. I haven't spent the $300 necessary to obtain a copy yet.
1835-55 sounds right to me also. Not Rev War era.
