Wow! I tried finishing my maple stock with various wood stains from Lowes but was never happy with the results. My last attempt was Rosewood waterbase stain shown in the Major Overhaul thread. Something just wasn't right with the look. Then I read about using Plum Brown/dissolved steel wool as a maple stock treatment. Oh my gosh! Pretty dark stripes began to appear in areas that looked plain before now. It looks like an entirely different piece of wood. I finished it with several coats of True Oil rubbed on by finger in very light coats. The stripes are actually like 3-D, some seem to disappear as you move the stock back and forth and then reappear. Very awesome and it's just the look I wanted all along but I thought my stock wood lacked the curl and I just happened to have Plum Brown here at the house. Thanks TANSTAAFL! Photos soon to follow if you're interested.
