Polishing the bore

Martin: 400 grit is fine enough. You just want to knock off the burrs, and sharp edge, and not be trying to recrown the barrel by hand. It can be done, but there are special tools made that use a bore guide to make sure that you center the crown with the bore, and not take off more metal on one side or another. I clamped my barrel in a vise( using padded jaws) so I had both hands free. One hand held the handle and emery cloth. The other held the muzzle with the back of the hand, while the thumb and forefinger guided the handle so I did not tip it to one side or another. Take your time, and pretend you are squeezing orange halves on a juicer.

hi ho paul,

that tip about the magic marker was great!!! thanks a lot :hatsoff:

..ttfn..grampa..

I first tried to just orient the stripes on some pillow ticking, and then realized ( DUH!) That I didn't know which end was up or down! So, I went to a magic marker I had in my range box for scoring targets, and solved my temporary lapse in thinking. Hope it helps.

Paul,
Just try to “recrown” both barrels with some 400 paper.
First with a Minnie bullet 5 turns, then with a 12ga ball 10 turns and finally with a 20ga ball another 100.
No more patch cutting seating the ball, only a little on cleaning patches but only on second and third ring (all have the same diameter.).
Thank you very much!
Martin

I am glad that was so easy for you, Martin. You are welcome for the advice. I was very fortunate to belong to a Black Powder club that has many members older than me, who were very kind to answer my many questions. Not everyone is that fortunate. But, with this forum, any shooter has a great place to go for advice about just anything having to do with ML firearms.

Don't miss an opportunity to help another shooter, or to make another friend. A man's wealth is measured not by the size of his purse, but my the number of friends he has. :hatsoff:

Paul,

You are quite right.
Thanks
