Just finished a nice little Portmanteau.
It measures 8 1/2" long by 4 1/2" round ends. The flap overlaps 3/4" on each side.
The strap measures 3/4" and John Rader made the iron hardware.
An 7/8 Oz., grade #1 hide was used and sewn with Victors 100% linen thread using a saddle stitch.
The entire exterior of the bag was finished with antiquing gel and rubbed to complete the antique finish.

There is documentation that the French Military Officers carried their "coats" in a Portmanteau. (Coat carrier) in the 1700's and into the 1800's.
The original were larger to accommodate their regimental coats, but I'm sure there were examples of smaller versions.

My French wife has indicated the word "Portmanteau" translates to "coat carrier".
