Which part of PA do you live in? If you are looking to start on building your own gun, you may want to ask around and find someone that builds guns to help answer some of the questions. It amazing how willing these guys are to help beginners.
Books, One option is to go to Dixon's muzzleloading in Kempton. A web search will put you in touch with their web site. They have books, supplies and answers.
The easiest source of books is Track of the Wolf. Check out their web site. Most people go with "The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle" by Dixon, Ehrig and Miller. The other one is "The Gunsmiths of Greenville Co" by Peter Alexander.
