I am getting around to the nose cap on my daughters gun this weekend and was thinking about pouring one. I watched it done on Hershel Houses tape but dont remember the specifics. This is on a full stock. My main thought is how do you dam up the barrel channel so the pewter doesn't run down. Anyone out there have any pointers or know of a site to go to explaining how to do it?

Put the barrel in but heat it up first. The pewter will only fill up any gaps between the wood and barrel for a short distance.

Also tape on a paper mold for the outside and tuck the paper under a piece of ramrod to form the groove.

Check out this hotlink for a post that deals with what is involved.
Although this post shows a half stock, the same thing applies to a full stock.

I used Cerrobend (don't tell anyone) instead of pewter because I had it on hand, and it has a much lower melting point.

The barrel dams up the barrel channel. It's the ramrod hole (or in your case, groove) and the place where the sides of the stock come up against the barrel that is tough to dam off.

CASTING NOSECAP

Rabbit,
Zonie's post is what you want.
I use regular kid's oil based clay to fill the voids.
Be sure to drill and countersink some pilot holes, and warm the area with a heat gun before the pour.
Regards,
Terry
