pouring a pewter cap on a knife handle

Cap is the wrong word I want to put a pewter band at the bottom of a wood knife handle, where the handle meets the hand guard. I have the wood removed for the pewter but I have never poured pewter so I need advice in the pouring. How hot does the pewter need to be? I do not want to mess up the project at this stage so I ask the experts.
