There is no one 'proper' charge.

.44 cal c&b revolvers, whether Colt, Remington, Rogers & Spencer or whatever design, can effectively use from 20 to 35 gr fffg real black powder (Goex). 777 should be reduced 10 to 15%, so the range would be 17 to 30 gr fffg 777.

The load also depends on your intended use; shooting paper targets at matches requires a different load than hunting medium sized game at short range.

You should develop the load for each combination of revolver, projectile and propellant. Start with the minimum load, shoot 3-5 shots at the intended range, clean the gun, increase the load 3-5 grains, shoot another group, etc. Repeat until the group sizes start to increase. The load that gives you the smallest group is the best load for that powder, projectile, gun and range.

My .44 cal revolvers generally work best between 25 and 30 gr fffg Goex.

for a .44 try a .357mag (about 25grs) casefull of 3F for 'target' load.
and a 7.62X39 casefull (AK or SK case) for a 'hot' load (this is 32grs) which leaves room for a felt.
many revolvers group tighter with the less-than-max charges.
