I would like to make a powder horn to go with my rifle. Who makes good quality kits? Thanks...

Now here is the answer to your question,,,,
Go to,"The Horners Bench" and read..Some fine information there.
Kit,,,make your own!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buy a cow horn, a piece of 1X4 pine and the Sibley's book on re-creating powderhorns and you're all set.

Well, except for the hacksaw, drill, files, sandpaper or scraper, nails or toothpicks for pegs, a little bees wax or epoxy, maybe some dye, and a strap.

All of the difficult work is done. They come with really good insutructions for a first timer. You put it all together. Sort of like putting together a model car kit.

How about a Mnt. Goat horn and a piece of local vine maple! Not very HC/PC but definately unique!!

How long did you guys take to make your first horns?

Im gonna order that book and some horns and get to work on a few.wanna have something descent to give my grandpa for christmas. Somethong he can add to his collection of civil war and earlier items

You don't want to have something just DECENT to give to your Grandpa. __ You want to do the best you possibly can! __ Experienced horn makers can get a horn made quicker, than a person who is making their first, so you can't really measure the speed! __ You start soon and you should have plenty of time to make a basic simple, BUT WELL MADE powder horn.

Good luck,
Rick

Thanks horner. I said descent because my standards are pretty high haha. Another reason im getting more than one horn. Earlier this year he found out out i was starting to dabble in leather so i left his house with an old bowie in need of a sheath and a saber in need of scabbard repairs (broken in 3 spots) panicked a little on these projects but when i finished them he was ecstatic.

Now back on topic

Do yourself a favor and talk to Rick(horner75) I have the luckn of living very close to him and he is a wealth of knowledge. I have seen firsthand his work and own three pieces. I don't care what anyone says about him, he is topnotch and will help anyone.

I bought a horn from powderhornsandmore, went to the horner's bench and did a lot of reading and asked some questions(maybe too many :) ) and I completely enjoyed it. Looking foward to another. Great folks there will help anyone out; as horner75 did several times. I thought about the kit but then changed my mind and made a lobed horn.

Yeah. Don't let that avatar image throw you. Rick is a great guy and those years in prison turned him around. :rotf:

Seriously, my favorite horn came from him and I am delighted every time I hold it.

I've made my own horns, many, but none lease me like those I have purchsed from Rick and Griz (another horner who used to hang around this forum).
