I remebered I have some reclaimed 100 year old American Chestnut 1" boards in the shop Bucktales gave me. The wood looks beautiful with aquafortis on it and wonder if I can use a piece for the butt plug of a horn? Anyone know if it was used for powder horns at all, I figure it must have been unless theres something about the wood I'm not aware of??

I think they were made of whatever was available, I used a piece of scrap walnut board..... but I dont think this comment is verry helpful to ya.

Go for it swampy, dont forget the pictures!
Hey, That wood you have is almost as old as Wick! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Swampy -
I used some wormy chestnut reclaimed from an old outbuilding on my in-law's farm, "way up the holler" in West Virginny.
I believe you'll like it.
Can be a little splintery in spots.

considering that chestnut was about the most common tree going before the blight I would hazard a guess that it would have been fairly common in many aplications, horn plugs being one of them. Not many complete horns are actually around considering how many were made over the years and yea pine seems to be the most commonly found wood(easily worked) but I'd lay money that you would have found just about any wood going at one time. Just my opinion guys.ps, MM that is one fine looken horn!! YMHS Birdman

Yeah thats my guess too Birdman. I have a few boards so what the hay, going to do it.

Nice MM, thanks for posting that.
