Is it possible for a company to mass produce powder horns with scrimshaw on them or are all horns with scrimshaw on them hand made? Thanks

Lyman, I'm sure that a device to mass produce scrimshaw could be built..they have such things to sign multiple autographs for instance. I will say I have never seen a scrimshawed horn that wasn't done by hand, so maybe there isn't enough of a market to have that machine designed and built...Hank

They have been doing machine scrimshaw for years on flat surfaces like the scales on pocket knife handles and pendant necklaces made of ivory. However, I am unaware of any way to scrimshaw by machine on a rounded variable surface like a powder horn.

rancher,
I guess anything these days is possible.
I have gotten my horns from builders with the
scrim I specify.

Rancher,

I was at NMLRA shoot at Friendship, In and a fellow had some map horns that were done on a laser engraver! The amount of detail and the lettering was fantastic. I questioned the method and was informed it cut well at very low power and he had to a rotary attachment to orient properly so it didn't lose detail on the circumference. He also mentioned the smell of burning horn and I could sympathize with him. He said it reminds you in a hurry to turn the exhaust on. I was very impressed with the quality, but it still looked "fake" to me since the lines were so perfect. I wouldn't have thought it could have done so well, but it looked like a photograph on the horn when inked. I think I'll still stick to my hand- done method.
