I'am currently making a contemporary powder horn with an 18th century F & I war theme, which involves British Red Coats. My question is, do I "Red Ink" the red coats or other themes requiring the color red, before or after i dye the horn body?? If after the dying process, will the dye discolor the red ink?? Or exactly how should i proceed??

Thank you for any and all suggestions,
Danny :hatsoff:

Dye first. If the red ink doesn't show up, use artist's oil color instead. If it's a bright red, you can tone it down with a little burnt umber, or use Venetian red. Indian red is purple-brown, BTW.

So your saying to use an actual oil base paint, instead of the India Ink??

Thanks,
Danny

Pichou's method or just dye first and rub some powdered red tempera paint into the area you want red and wipe off carefully. Then seal by a couple coats of paste wax.
