Wondering if this might be a Salt horn, Sugar horn, some sort of storage horn rather than any kind of powder horn...spout would be way too big for powder (cork is probably a modern add-on) no attachment points for any sort of strap or thong...what do you think?

:hmm: Is there any chance that it might be a horn used for shot? This was a common type of shot container used by the old "gunners" up here around the first of the 20th century.
I don't want to hijack your thread so I'll send you a couple of photos as examples by P/M

No, No...go ahead and post them...I just listed a couple of examples like Salt or Sugar to help explain my question...it's for sale as a 'priming horn' on an auction but even a Pilgrim like me gave pause when I saw the photos...wonder if a shot horn would be carried in a pouch or on a strap?

:hmm: I wonder just what the owner was intending to prime with it................a cannon?
Here's a couple of pictures of a horn that I was told was a "shot" horn. It makes sense, because it was found in the attic of an old house that is within sight of one of the best duck hunting spots in the area.

It doesn't appear that there was any way to attach a strap to the butt plug. Come to think of it; a horn full of lead shot would be pretty heavy to wear around your neck, especially if you were hunting from a boat (as these fellows would have been) and couldn't swim.

I am thinking this is a round ball horn, no need for a strap if you slip it into your coat pocket...

If you have the horns, see if there is traces of lead on the inside...

Yup, guess it could also be an RB horn...don't have the horn (it's on an auction)

this may sound wierd but you could always "smell" the inside. if it was for tobacco, sugar, or other organic matter it would smell like it. or you could use a cotton swabb to take a sample from the inside and see what it is. just my nickles worth. Dave
