Back some time ago I saw a powder horn with an end that looked like it may have come from a late style brass powder dispenser. It has a small spring loaded device on the end that when depressed lets the powder go into the measure. I would like to install one of these on my horn but cannot find the post or picture. It seem like I need three hands to load the way I am set up now.

If you are thinking of using it as a measurer and then dumping the powder right from the spout to the barrel, DON'T. You still need to use a seperate powder measurer to be safe.

These devices are very dangerous, WE. powder residue build up on the " gate" that separates the powder in the horn from the outside. The residue also eventually builds up enough to prevent the gate from closing properly. That horn is a large grenade, you are holding, and if a spark gets in their, part of you is going to be over here!

ALWAYS LOAD FROM A POWDER HORN OR FLASK INTO A SEPARATE POWDER MEASURE. Then close the powder source up, and put it aside way from fire, heat, etc. then pour the powder from the powder measure into the gun barrel. IF a charge of powder is ignited in the barrel as you pour it in, at most you will suffer some minor burns. If that powder horn ignited, you probably won't be around to worry about the lawsuits that will be filed against your estate.

For these reasons, I discourage friends from putting spouts, or measures on their horns or flask. Its too much a temptation, and that is how you get hurt.

He said in his post that he was going to put in a measure. Dilly

War Eagle,
Is this for the main charge or for the primer for flintlock. I know that you can get the brass end that will dispense 4F by it's self from most muzzleloading supply shops.

I've installed those on my first powder horns. Certainly convenient & super neat, but I've gone traditional. The only metal now is on the plug (nails) or for the strap.

That is what I am looking for. I do plan to use a powder measure, Im just looking for a better way to get the powder from the horn into the measure. With the spout I have now I seem to pour more on me and the ground than I do in the measure. Thanks for the pic.

And while we are on the subject, something to think about. I watched as a shooters possible bag or shooting pouch blew up!!!!! scared hell out of all of us. seems that he was spilling powder into the bag from his primeing horn, the flap was up and a spark flew in and POOOF! NOW IT IS FUNNY ,BUT THEN NO.Think about it and clean out the pouch or weight the flap. Bob

If you want to spill less powder, tip the powder measure to the side, or at least tip it 45 degrees, to the mouth of the horn, and then tip the measure down while you tip the horn up, with the two mouths together. That will fill the measure, and you can tip the horn down to stop the flow of powder and cut it off with your thumb or finger quickly being placed over the mouth of the horn.

I then tap the meaure with the mouth of the horn to settle the powder in the measure, and then pour a little more powder into the measure to bring it up to the top, with a small amount of powder creating a cone on top. Just keep a thumb over the mouth of the horn when you are tipping the horn up, and you will feel when the powder shifts towards the mouth. Then you can slowly move your thumb off the mouth of the horn to pour as little an amount of powder into your measure as you like.

Surely you have done this same kind of hand and finger movement pouring liquids out of the mouth of a bottle. I sacrifice may 1 grain of powder when I level the charge in the horn with my knife, or other straight edge. that is all. I am not worried about starting any unexpected fires doing so.

WAR EAGLE I agree with the advise of Paul . You might try mentally counting as you pour also , this way you have an idea when the seperate measure will be full . Consistancy is the secret to succeding .By counting , you will notice the fill rate of your measure this might lead to better scores. just my two cents .

I hate to get hammered for this., but...., here goes.

I use that spring loaded device on my LARGE horn I use for the purpose of filling tin foil pre-loads for my cannons.

Also I have some small elk horn chargers with the said spring mechanism I use to prime my cannons vents..., all 12. I do not fire high speed back to back loads with the cannon. more like we fire worm., then swab wet., then dry.,then check the barrel then reload.

Needless to say I am still here. My cannon crew is still here..., we've never lost anyone. Also we havent gummed-up a spring device with blackpowder., to a point we have it partially open ??? never..,ever..., never seen that one. And we are subjected to high humidity and water.

I think this is really prefrence., not the rule.
If you prefer a horn and a measure., that works .

I like my easy to change pre-measure tubes. It works very well for us.
