Building yourself a powder horn or redoing an old one?

I found that a violin tuning key makes a great powder horn plug, it's tapered fit seals the powder in and it looks good too...

The pegs can be cut to length and sanded to a smaller diameter for priming horns as well...

You can order them at any music shop, beats the heck out of this... :imo:

See how much nicer this looks... :redthumb:

Good idea, musketman! I just finished a couple buffalo powder horns, one of which is a priming horn. I like to use the tip I cut off and insert a peg, this gives a look of a complete horn. I do like the idea of using a violin tuning key. Maybe on my next horn set I'll give them a try. Thanks for the tip!

Yep, they are hard to beat. I always drill a hole thru them for a thong so they don't get lost. Just bought some yesterday at the Ft. Bridger rondevoux. :redthumb:

i make a small tip thats about half the size of the violin key but in about the same shape. I make them out of the tip of a deer horn.
they start out real white and turn a nice ivory as they age

I'd like to know the way you tied that strap to your horn. I have a similar strap, but it keeps coming off.

Cutting a tappered hole in the horn makes a big difference in keeping the plug from getting stuck and always a good fit...hope this helps.....Wulf :hmm:

My horn strap is similar to what Musketman pictured in his original post at the bottom of the frame. My strap has four braids, about four inches long each on each end of the strap. The plug in the large end of the horn has an oval knob turned as part of it with an undercut of about 3/32" to 1/8". Whenever I tie the strap to that end, even though I try to get as much of the braid into the undercut, it won't hold.
