I am looking to make a strap for my powder horn. Any ideas or advice on what type of material to use? I like the look of a wider style strap and not one that is skinny such as one made from jute or sinew. I am not looking for anything too fancy, just a nice simple strap to make. I know there are some out there from different sites that i can buy, but i would rather have the satisfaction of knowing that i made it myself.

I have found that Jo Anns fabric stores has a lot of trim for drapes that would make nice straps. Just stop by and have a look.

I went to a black powder show and bought a length of leather. It is about 1/8" thick and 5/16" to 3/8" wide and length to suit. He also had leather stain. Good luck. DPMARTIN

The three most common straps are. Leather, linnen, and course hemp. The course hemp is available from furniture shops that repair or redo furniture. I like the course hemp because it is easy to add bead work or a patch knife sheath. :idunno:

It takes some artistry and cleverness to make a good servicable and attractive horn strap. I have neither of those qualities and, as a result, have been struggling and cobbling ugly things together for decades. (I'm too cheap to buy a really good one. )
What I can advise it to never use artificial sinew. It does not knot well and, if you do use it, I guarantee, one day you will return to camp after a hunt in the woods to find a horn missing. Real sinew, if you can get some, or hemp work just fine, as others have already said.

Not a bad idea to check thrift stores for belts. My last foray netted two identical woven cloth belts $1.00 each. Turned them into a strap for my Son's hunting bag.

Leather purses also make nice possible bags. Plus thrift srores often have womens coats with real fur collars cheap. But then I am just plain cheap! :idunno:

Ronnie, if you have any skills sewing, you could easily sew up a cotton or linen strap relatively easy. sew leather tabs on the ends and, Viola! just choose the fabric you like and get your measurements right the first time!
