I made this powder horn from a steer horn i picked up at a garage sale for 3 bucks.
The white wood is Waiwi or strawberry guava the darker wood is Koa.

Edit: forgot to add pics.

Simple but effective. While we all enjoy seeing fancy schrimshaw work. There is a lot to be said for a simple, basic, horn. I wonder how many of the originals had schrimshawing on them and how many were just plain "working " horns. There is a lot of satisfaction in having made your own.

THAT'LL WORK!....Nice first powder horn! To answer Ohio Ramrods question is very simple!....NONE! There were no such thing as schrimshawing powder horns??? There was horn engraving or was that something I heard?

Not picking on you OR ..... I know it's a typeo! Just having fun with ya!

Looks like that will work for you.
Is that wood easy to work with?

Hey guys thanks for the all the comments,
I was definately going for a no frills approach, just a simple horn designed to get used. I see all these fancy horns in museums and collections, all thats means is the simple ones got used til they broke.

The Koa wood is pretty hard but it's not that tough to work with, I am currenty making a musket stock from Koa with nothing but hand tools.
The Waiwi or strawberry guava is a bit tougher it tends to gum up any saw blades you use.

As for the horn hanging tip down, I did that because i orignally planned to make the horn removable from the band with the staple in it, so it would just be wedged into the band and sort of held by gravity, while still being removable, but after wearing the horn for awhile and having it come loose i decided to epoxy the band on.
