Powder Measue/Short Starter

Hi All

I found this on the Internet and thought it was very clever. It's a combination powder measure and short starter. Currently holds 80 grains of FFG. And small enough to fit inside a hunting pouch. Just thought ya'll would like to see it.

It is clever and compact, but personally I would not want to hit my palm on the open end when using the long rod.

Kind of a Swiss Army powder measure.

I have taken 3/4 inch dowel and drilled a powder measure hole. Then at the level of the bottom of the hole I’ve cut it down to thin enough to be a starter but only two inches long or so , fits inside a bag well.

Honestly?
He could have rounded the pour edges a bit more to make it smooth,, as well as the obvious straight band saw cuts of the antler, it's too mechanical in it's presentation to be really nice.
It's Ok, to smooth and round those edges.
The small brass rod insert for the short start would be handy in it's position,, but the long end brass rod given it's position to the sharp band saw cut's of the horn would hurt if actually used to drive the ball further.
And there could be a little less epoxy exposed.

I have made many similar. But, I prefer to use end cut scrap from ram rods and always round the edges for appearance and ease on the hands.

looks as much like flat sanded coping saw (HC) cuts as bandsaw.......i'll probably make one tonight while my wife is having a sleep-study done.

That's pretty neat.....But, I'll one up ya'.....
One day while hunting I forgot my ball starter....and discovered that this worked well to short start, long start, measure and carry my powder.....
I used the base as a short starter, and the spout and a long starter.... :haha:

That horn measure that's shown would have you bleeding in nothing flat. For serous use ,can't beat rounded and smoothed edges.Wack it a couple times ,you'll figure it out.

Thank you all for your replys. No, I don't believe this will replace the convenience of the standaed short starter with it's round ball.
Yes, I'll file down the sharp edges. Will also look better as mentioned above.
I'll be at the Range tomorrow, so I'll give it a try.
I think I can grab around it and just push it into the bore. We'll see. :hmm:

Well, I tried it out this morning. Let's just say that you wouldn't want to use it for a day at the Range :haha: Or a Rendevous or other where you plan on doing a lot of shooting.
But for inside a pouch while hunting, it would work fine. You sort of need to grip it with both hands and pull back towards the muzzle. Hard to explain. The deer sinew lanyard is just in the way.
But for ocassional use, it's OK.

I’ve used a small similar starter with loading block, and didn’t have a need for the short leg. In a bag it’s handy since a short ball board have an extra hole that the long leg of the starter can go through. When you reach in to the bag horn and patched ball measure are all in your hand in one move.

Clever idea! A bit of smoothing off edges would make it look better and maybe not hurt your hand as much.
Here are a couple of plain measures I made years ago. The insides were polished and the edges smoothed off.
