Is there a rule of thumb for using a powder measure to weigh shot? Some sort of equivalency? The TC owners manual says that 60 grains = 7/8 oz shot. How about 1oz, .75oz etc?

Thanks

Thanks, He-Bear. Great info and great timing; I just got a SxS percussion 12 guage.

Check my thread "SxS Percussion 12 Guage" on this board. Rebel gave me some good info on calculating shot weight by volume. I'm sorry I don't know how to link that thread for you.

On second thought I can quote Rebels post for you:

I have a Navy Arms double barrel. They do have a manual for there shotguns. I used the info in it amd in the T/C manual as well as from things i read in muzzleloader magazines. If you start with 70 grs of 3f Black powder or the same volume of Pyrodex RS, an overpowder wad, half a lubed fiber cushion wad, 1 0z (just use the 70gr setting on your powder measurer to get 1 oz) of shot, and an overshot card wad. You can also use plastic shot cups to tighten up the pattern. They list 102 gr. (3 3/4drams)of powder and 1 1/4 oz of shot as a maximum load. I normally use 90-95 grs of Pyrodex RS and 1 1/4 oz of shot for most of my hunting. My shotgun has cylinder bore barrels. Mine also shoots well with .690 rd. balls.

I use an old powder/shot dipper. It is 5/8" ID and adjustable in depth from .950" to 1.7". It is marked for ounces of shot and drams of powder, from 1oz.=2 1/2 drams, up to 2 1/4 oz=4 3/4 drams.
It's easy enough to calculate proportions from that, 2 1/2 drams would be 68 grains per ounce of shot, say 70 gr. close enough.
Volume measures are never exactly as marked and it depends on the shape of the measure. A long, narrow measure such as the common adjustable powder measure will not throw the same proportion of powder to shot as would a short fat measure like my dipper.
Confusing enough? Well for all practical purposes, just say 70gr=1oz and 90gr=1 1/4oz and as Jeremiah Johnson told his bride, "that is all you need to know." :haha: :haha:

I use the same setting for shot as I do powder, this make for less equiptment to carry afield...
