I have recently made a powder measure for 65g but the first time I used it the powder spilt all over the muzzle with little going down. :cursing: I have another spare deer antler soo can anyone give me some suggestions on how to improve my powder measure and still have it be traditional. :hmm:

You can make a measure real easy this way, maybe not too traditional but you wont spill any powder. Take a piece of copper tubing that will just fit inside your barrel, cut it long so it will easily hold 65grs, I would leave it so you have a little room to spare, can shorten it later if you want. Whack one end with a hammer, put in a vice and squeeze flat, round corners, I use tin snipes, drill hole in flat for thong. I can make one in 20 mins. You could use tin tubes if you have them, They don't leak any powder out the flat end. Have different sizes for different guns. Dilly

Well it helps if you dont drink to much hightest coffee before you shoot that way you
don't get the shake's lol, Boar-dilly I like that idea

They all will if just dumped.
SKenton showed a nice top shape, you can use a round file to make the pour side shaped a little better,
, but I still use my off hand finger and thumb to help "guide" the powder down the bore

Next time start drilling the hole a little towards the pour side, or tip it a bit in that direction before ya do the finish depth of your prefered amount. +/- a grain or two usually won't change your group much.

Hi Cody, I wish that when I was just 15, that I could even make anything and your making a powder measure! ... One thing that I found that helps, is to try to keep the end of the measure thin around the wall of that measure. When you pour the charge down the bore, just grasp the top of the muzzle with your thumb and fore finger to act as a funnel while loading!

Keep up the good work and enjoy making your own!

Heres a few you can look at. I used all except the Elk tined measure this year without a problem, they all pour powder right into the muzzle without spillage. They are thinned at the top like Horner was saying and you can see best with the first one a raised thin edge that helps to get the powder going in the right direction.

I take a circular file to one side to make a pour like this.

I make these out of the brass tubing you can buy in hobby stores. Pick a tube size smaller than your bore and you won't have any trouble. You can cut the end flat or put a pouring lip on it. These have lathe turned brass end caps, but you can use wood, antler, etc., and hand carve it.

Davec2 those are nice like your design ! Ive seen the turkey leg bone measure's and they seem to be nice with a nice wood plug

Just make a little lip like the one I made on this antler measure.I made this for a .40 cal. and never had any problems.

Part of loading powder down the muzzle involves technique. You can drop powder out of any powder measure, unless its got an attached funnel, as I have on my brass adjustable powder measure.

For a "fixed" powder measure, LEARN to use your the Web between the thumb and index finger to form a guide( partial funnel on the muzzle, around the bore. Then pour the powder into the barrel towards the web of your hand. Any powder that "misses" the bore, will hit either the side of your thumb, or index finger, or the flesh of your web. In all cases, the powder will either slide, or bounce off these surfaces and into the bore, OR, a slight upward movement of your hand will cause the granules to slide off into the barrel.

Practice this at home pouring rice into a small necked bottle( a beer or pop bottle works just fine). Do it over a countertop, with a newspaper or paper towels or wax paper on the top to catch any spilled rice. That way you can return the spilled rice to the container. When y0ou can pour all the rice into the bottle neck consistently, wit4hout spilling any of the rice, you are ready to do the same with your MLer and real powder. :hmm:  :hatsoff:

Them look good, you done well. Nothing like making your own stuff. Dilly

Here`s the setup I made for my .32cal squirrel rifle. The bigger funnel goes in the muzzle then just dump the 25gr measure in the bore. It works alot easier than it looks because I hold both pieces between different fingers of my left hand, set the funnel in the bore and dump the charge. For my .45`s and .50cal I just put angled spouts on my measures and they work fine, but the .32 bore is so tiny it was still a PITA so I came up with the funnel idea.

Your on the right road there Hunter3. Making your own stuff is the way to go  Lot`s more fun than using "store bought"
