CLOSED Powder scale recommendation

Hope this is the correct forum for this. I am needing a recommendation for a consistently accurate powder measuring scale that is under $200. Would prefer digital but analog is ok too. Hogdon and Lyman have received less than stellar reviews on maintaining zero. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I may have misunderstood your question; are you looking for a powder scale that gives weight only, or a powder measure that dispenses set loads? I gave a recommendation for the latter.

Personally, I would never buy anything but digital.

Depends on what your using it for whether you need a powder dispenser type or not.

Frankford also has some options there, though I’ve not done as much comparing of weight only options. You might check out their Frankford Arsenal Platinum Series Precision Scale. FA seems to be a good budget friendly option for such things.

Sad to say, but PACT does not sell digital reloading scales anymore. There easily has to be 20 more guys at my local range who are are using the BBK series and they have been bulletproof and flawless. A few shooters hold national records.

… maybe they lost their production source? Too bad, as it was a superior design and functionality and reliability were 100%!

Make sure the one you buy has ‘check’ weights. If not, the Pact website does sell old stock check weights for $9 a set

I use a RCBS 505 beam scale. Weighs to 500 grains and is very accurate.

For a few bucks more, go with the RCBS Chargemaster, it works GREAT, I have loaded thousands, that's right thousands of BP rounds using it and would not be without it for high volume weighing/loading.

I prefer beam scales, no batteries, or power supply and they don't drift. For $200 you can pick up a very nice Ohaus M5. I too use a RCBS (Ohaus made) 505, it's a good scale and can be picked up on e bay pretty cheap. Just make sure not to buy the later mode foreign made beam scales.

The digital scales are what I prefer to use, but given the budget as stated by the OP, I would invest in a mechanical beam scale. They are slower and you can damage them, but they don’t just go bad or stop working on you if you take care of them. Had one digital scale that would just go out of adjustment at random times and couldn’t trust it. Personally I currently use both a mechanical beam and a digital scale. Easy and reassuring to make sure they always agree. One beam scale I have still works great even though it was made around 60 years ago by Herters. I also have an industrial lab grade Sartorius scale with certified calibration weights (bought it as a non-functioning item at going out if business sale for scrap value, only thing wrong was that the power cord/transformer was missing, but it was found in the box with the weights), but that is not what the OP asked about. I would recommend the best mechanical beam scale the budget allows, then buy a digital scale to pair with it when you can. We are talking about weighing gun powder here, correct?

Again! What’s the purpose?

Weighing bullets? Beam scale to slow for comparative purposes.
Weighing powder charges. Beam scale to slow for volume reloading.

I have had Ohaus and still have a RCBS but hardly ever use them as the Pact and Chargemaster plug in to the wall so no batteries and are fast and accurate.

You can not beat a triple beam scale! I have an "Ohaus" scale in grains that I got many years ago and it still serves me well today. I check its accuracy each time I use it. It has an adjustment to zero it in but I can't remember when I ever had to adjust it? I will say I prefer a triple beam scale over a digital.

Isn’t the Chargemaster a powder dispenser? Wasn’t aware it was rated for use with blackpowder.

I gave my Ohaus away, to big and clumsy.

Chargemaster works great with BP, once you get past the fear of static electricity and BP all of the powder dispensing scales work great.

We have one Ohaus M5 and two RCBS 10-10s. They are the best scales, period.
The 505 is dang nice too.
Ive been using these since the 60s. Tried other brands, even tired 3 different electronic ones.
Our weather and them dont get along. Dang is Im waiting 45 mins for a scale to sinc.

I hope we are talking Smokeless, Holy Black is done by volume.
But then everyone knew that already.
