I know I have read on here before about how to pre-lube patches with NL1000, Moose Milk, etc., but I can't seem to find that info in a search. Maybe I need to learn to search better. If anyone could repost that info, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I pre-lube 1-1/2" x 6' strips of cotton patching by dipping them in castor oil moose milk, allowing them to dry overnight while laid flat on wax paper, then repeating once more the next day. I roll them up and keep them in ziplock baggies (or wrapped in wax paper) until I need them. Then, I transfer a roll into a deerskin pouch that has been smeared well inside with molten beeswax. They are almost, but not quite, dry to the touch. I then use the strips to fill my ball block or load at tyhe muzzle by palming the little pouch in my left hand and just pulling out enough material (I start it at the center of the roll so it feeds out easier).

One little 2" x 2" x 3/4" flattened bag holds enough patching for 60 shots and is easy to find, not messy, and compact.

No idea if it is period correct, but I'm sticking to it. For target shooting I drip a little more moose milk on them and wipe it around between my thumb and fingers. This will also allow unlimited shooting without wiping between shots. The "dry" patch alone needs a spit patch every fifth shot or so (in my rifles). A thinner patch material will also allow wipeless shooting, at the cost of some accuracy.

I think they squeeze some bore butter on a stack of patches, and nuke 'em until they are all impregnated. :peace:

My favorite way is as follows...Heat your lube mix up until it's good and liquid. I usually cut my patch material in 6" withs, mix it in the melted lube mix. then on a piece of glass I use a wide plastic scraper and keep squeegin the mix out of the material, until I can't get anymore out. This really works the lube into the fibers and leaves pleanty in the patch with out being to messy. I the cut my patches in 1 1/2" to 2" strips as I cut mine at the muzzle. :results: :m2c:

I no longer use pre-lubed patches. If you're talking pre-cut patches that you want to lube with bore butter, etc. Go ahead and melt the lube or dunk the wad of patches (still together as a group) into the lube of your choice. After the patches have soaked up all the lube they can hold, squeeze out as much of the liquid lube you can with your fingers. If this is going to be a lube that will harden, take the patches as a group. Put them in some paper towel, then between two boards and squeeze them in a vice. The more pressure you add the more lube will be expanded. You can make them as wet as you like that way. After they are done, put them in a zip lock plastic bag or small plastic pill bottle and keep them that way....
