I pre-lube 1-1/2" x 6' strips of cotton patching by dipping them in castor oil moose milk, allowing them to dry overnight while laid flat on wax paper, then repeating once more the next day. I roll them up and keep them in ziplock baggies (or wrapped in wax paper) until I need them. Then, I transfer a roll into a deerskin pouch that has been smeared well inside with molten beeswax. They are almost, but not quite, dry to the touch. I then use the strips to fill my ball block or load at tyhe muzzle by palming the little pouch in my left hand and just pulling out enough material (I start it at the center of the roll so it feeds out easier).
One little 2" x 2" x 3/4" flattened bag holds enough patching for 60 shots and is easy to find, not messy, and compact.

No idea if it is period correct, but I'm sticking to it. For target shooting I drip a little more moose milk on them and wipe it around between my thumb and fingers. This will also allow unlimited shooting without wiping between shots. The "dry" patch alone needs a spit patch every fifth shot or so (in my rifles). A thinner patch material will also allow wipeless shooting, at the cost of some accuracy.
