I have a friend who swears by model airplane fuel to preserve his bore. The castor oil does the preserving and the nitro-menthane evaporates..... makes sense in a sort of way. Has any one tried this or even thought about it?

well i would say its a good way to rust it up ....
seriously I have done RC almost as long as BP ,,20+years.

when done flying at the end of the day you will see any good RC pilot fill his engine with after run oil and turn it a few times . if this isnt done over time the bearings will pit and damage the engine . In fact all leading RC engine manufactures , OS, SATO, Fox to name a few state this in there instructions .
10% aircraft fuel has 10% nitro, and usually 15 to 20% castor or synthetics depending on the maker of the fuel that leaves 65% of what in your barrel .

sorry wouldn

. . . that leaves 65% of what in your barrel?

Methanol (methyl alcohol) makes up the other 65%.

I would say the fuel would make a decent powder solvent, but it needs something more for a bore protectant and to make it stick. That much alcohol will keep the castor in solution so it all pools at the bottom, leaving the upper metal mostly bare.

Moose milk has twice the oils of model fuel and I don't trust that as a protectant.

My Moose Snot is 81% oils and the balance is beeswax, which helps prevent rust by forming a physical barrier containing waxy oils of it's own. I use an alcohol wipe before using it to drive out any water after a cleaning.
