Price check on a stainless Ruger old army

Was at a local gun show this morning and saw a used ROA in stainless, The seller wanted $1100.00. I picked up an unfired blued ROA 2 years ago for $299.00 at my local dealer. Did they go up that much because they are discontinued? or was the dealer a little optimistic? I passed on the gun.

:haha: :haha: Yes and Yes. I would say the dealer was very optimistic and ROAs are increasing in value as they are no longer in production.

He was looking for a sucker. Check gunbroker and similar and get one ALOT cheaper! They good guns, I have an older blued model in excellent shape, from the 70's, with a mold that throws a single conical and a round ball. Think I paid $175.00 for it in 1981 (alotta money then)

I've often had the thought while walking around various gun shows, "These folks trying to sell guns are totally insane!
I know it's a harmless form of insanity but they gotta be nuts to be asking the prices they want."

My thinking is the gun should not be priced over 600.00 to 650.00 even at current inflated prices. I picked up a slightly used blued Centenial model ROA for 175.00 a few years back and although it seems like a super deal now, at the time, it was not particularly sensational. Mike D.

I have seen posts by people who picked one up from a neighbor, friend, etc. for as little as $350.

I saw one advertised last year for $485 but I was too cheap to buy it. Besides it was a dead ringer for the one I have.

wow- that's way too much, in my opinion anyway ... really ... you could probably get a pretty decent model 1911 for that kind of money, and even if you don't want a M1911, I think it's an outrageous price ...

still , the fellow will probably find someone with more money than sense...

I paid $400 at Cabela's last year for a "used" NIB Stainless. As far as I could tell, it hadn't even been turned. I put it up in the safe, and I won't break it out til my ROA Frankengun breaks. Stainless gun w/ blued Cylinder and screws. Shoots awesome, though.

Really depends

a. where you live.

b. what YOU call expensive.

c. how much you want a gun that is not only not made anymore, but shares nothing but a few screws [now gone, I bought the last lot a couple of years ago] with anything Ruger currently make.

Here in UK a fellow shooter, looking for one for over a year, lucked in to a giver-upper, and bought it for just under $500 - that, my friend, is a steal over here, where most s/s ROA are hitting 700-800, even 1000.

In fact, the last TWO that I saw, both blued shorty barrel versions, hit $1100 each, and were sold three days later when I dropped by for some melting lead.

My tip to any of you is - buy as many as you can find right now. For sure there will never be any more, if RUGER are to be belove.

If gun laws here were like yours, I be's buying every one I could find.

well, your point is well taken- just 'cause I think it's too much doesn't make it too much, any more than buying a Stradivarius will make you a concert violinist. sorta like high end automobiles: I can't see paying all that money to drive down the road, but some folks do, or they wouldn't keep making them.

When Ruger stopped making them, people realized that they may never own one. But wait I'm an American, how dare I be denied. From there the race to own one, took off.

I have always wanted a BP revolver and the Ruger Old Army was at the top of my wish list. I waited too long and they quit making them. I found a used blue one recently and traded a used Remington 1100 for it. I figure the shotgun was worth about 350-400 or so. Got that Old Army I wanted, finally. If it was ever shot, it must have been seldom and somebody cleaned it to make it look new. No box, wrench or book but it is going to be a shooter so that is not a big deal for me. Serial number looks like it was a 1989 production gun. I am a happy camper.

The short-barreled, fixed sight, blue ones go for more here than the 7 1/2" stainless ones.
The "Holy Grail" is supposed to be a 5" stainless with fixed sights from the factory.

I got a stainless and a regular one for 400 dollars in germany they are from the 1970-1980 and look great. I do have a 1975 stainless never fired also

Everyone has a budget and each person has a needs/wants list.

You have to decide, can you afford what is on your want list, seems simple.

Once I have what I want, I look for another that is in better condition and can I sell one for more than I paid for the lessor condition pistol.

The $1,100.00 asking is way high. Good ROAs are selling for about $600.00.
I sold mine about two years ago. I was blued and stamped as the 1776-1976 model. With the gun went a Ruger custom full flap holster and mold. At the time I only asked, and got, $400.00. I regret that I sold it.
