I have been browsing thriugh some sites looking to purchase the Lyman plains pistol in 50 cal. Why is there such a variance in the prices??

Shopping for guns is like shopping for cars, each place sets the prices they wish, prices do fluctuate a lot.

Just as with anything else, one seller needs cash yesterday & another is dreaming. With used guns, condition is important when discussing value, but one man's "excellent" is another man's "good". And some people just know the item in question and the market for it better than others. Same thing happens on Ebay & bookseller sites all the time.

You are referring to retail only, correct?

Often times, retail prices are set by the retailer's overhead, for example, areas with high taxes on businesses means higher prices, those same factors also effect distributors. The higher the overhead, the higher the prices. Others, well, they are just plain outright trying to make a fortune overnight, and gouge.

Responses seem to indicate that retailers are not very popular. Setting prices to attract the customer and still pay the bills is the constant rock and hard place for retailers. I have owned three different retail stores. One was a gun shop. About 50 miles down the road was a K-Mart. A certain brand of gun, both ml and modern, could be purchased wholesale in large quantities by KM to where they could retail them, at a profit, at 20% under the best wholsale price I could get in small volume. If I bought at the higher wholesale then marked up a moderate percentage, would that make me a crook? BTW, I competed with KM by not handling the same brands they did and providing better service. I do not fault customers for shopping price, I do. But, one should also consider the possibility of needing service after the purchase.

I have found that when the prices are lower than the average the are frequently out of stock. I do look around a lot at prices and in fact for factory made rifles and pistols it seems like the prices are pretty darned close most of the time. Geo. T.
