on another forum someone was saying about shooting flintlocks for years and that there is substitute powders that work better in the pan than real BP,just out of curiosity, anyone ever hear of this,,,,, :shake: :shake: :shake:

Um... Microcrystilane Fulminate of Mercury?

Theatrical Flash Powder? (which I think is also BP)

I've gotten substitutes to "work" (Shockey & APP - if ground into a flour in a mortar & pestle), but they are slower than all bejesus.

OTOH, using APP, Shockey or Black Mag is a great way to test your Lock (777 won't work). If you can get them to flare consistantly (they don't flash) your lock is working about as good as possible (i.e. lots of very hot sparks are hitting hard-to-ignite powder) Plus, since they don't have any sulfer (don'tuse Pyrodex), they don't smell, and you can test your lock in the house without the wife going ballistic. :grin:
